Support Malagasy-Led Science & Conservation
A vital way to strengthen ecological science and conservation and begin to address its racist and colonial history is by centering and elevating local researchers, communities, and organizations that are doing this work. Please take the time to explore the efforts of the handful of organizations listed below and support them if you have the ability to do so.
GERP: This group is devoted to scientific research and conservation for lemurs in Madagascar. GERP collaborates with local forest management organizations and communities to protect lemur habitat and protect them from extinction. Visit here to learn more about their work and ways to support the organization. Ikala STEM: This organization works to support and expand the participation of Malagasy women in scientific research. Ikala STEM provides networking and professional training opportunities as well as scholarships to support students. Please support their efforts and strongly consider donating here if you are able. Madagasikara Voakajy: This organization conducts and maintains biodiversity research and conservation projects and supports sustainable livelihoods for local communities at sites across Madagascar. Visit here to learn more about their work and please strongly considering donating to support them if you are able. |
Engagement & Education in Houston
OWLS Outreach
I have participated in the Rice Biosciences OWLS Outreach program since my first year as a PHD student. Through this initiative, my graduate student colleagues and I visit local primary and secondary schools in the greater Houston area to teach interactive biology lessons and teach students about graduate school and life as a scientist.
World Lemur Day
Founded by my collaborator, Dr. Jonah Ratsimbazafy, World Lemur Day is a worldwide celebration highlighting the diverse array of Malagasy primates and advocating for their conservation. In 2023, I participated in Houston Zoo's festival by educating guests about my work, sharing photographs and artwork by myself and other Rice students, and collaborating with staff and volunteers at the zoo to raise awareness for lemurs.
